How games conquered the movies

We used to think that as video games matured, as a medium, they would become more like Hollywood, becoming more focused on character development, plot reversals, and tight, suspense-driven narratives, rather than action set pieces alternating with cinematic cut scenes. Hoo boy, were we wrong. Instead the exact inverse has happened. Action movies have become more like video games. And you know what, this is no bad thing. I thought of this while watching John Wick 3 last night. (Which I loved, as I did 1 and 2.) It’s not just that its ballet of bullets — especially the one with the dogs — are so like video games, in both structure and form, that they seem to have been practically been torn from a controller; you can practically see health bars and Stun markets hovering over the heads of the characters. It’s also that the series’s primary costars, after … Continue reading

Donald Trump’s totally outrageous claim about investigating the Russia probe

(CNN)President Donald Trump was asked Tuesday whether he had requested that Attorney General William Barr open an investigation into the origins of the FBI’s counterintelligence probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and the possibility that someone(s) in Trump’s campaign colluded with the Russians. Which, well, OH MY GOD. Trump may be trying to sneak past on a technicality here in that he may not have gone directly to Barr and said, “Please open an investigation into whether or not the FBI relied on the dossier put together by Christopher Steele — and funded by the DNC and Hillary Clinton — to begin the FBI probe.”

Atwell plays Martha, who resurrects her late boyfriend Ash (Gleeson) as a chatbot and then later as a seemingly realistic AI robot who shares Ashs appearance but sadly not the subtle details of his personality. Dealing with issues as varied as cloning, what happens to our online profiles when we die and whether one should purchase a placid, fingerprint-less replica of a … Continue reading

As Social VR Grows, Users Are the Ones Building Its Worlds

When Rec Room launched in the summer of 2016, it didn't feel like a platform for social virtual reality as much as it did a collection of mini-games. You could change the clothes your avatar was wearing, sure, and you could talk to folks you met in the game's gym-like central hub. You could even play dodgeball or paintball against them. But despite its fun, cartoonish aesthetic and its up-with-people vibe, it was very much a work in progress. Peter Rubin What a Real Wedding in a Virtual Space Says About the Future Peter Rubin Facebook Can Make VR Avatars Look—and Move—Exactly Like You Peter Rubin Fortnite's Marshmello Concert Is the Future of the Metaverse But that was three very long years ago.
